OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady of Refuge School, a community of faith and love, is dedicated to nurturing the whole child - academically, spiritually, and physically - while encouraging all community members to develop their God-given gifts and to make choices as followers of Christ to enrich their lives, their communities, their world.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Our Lady of Refuge School, we recognize that parents are the primary educators of their children. We cooperate with them in the educational mission of the Church, which is outlined in the document, To Teach as Jesus Did. This document describes our threefold purpose: - to strive to teach the beliefs and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church - to do so within the experience of Catholic community, - to prepare students for service to others.

olrsThe administration and faculty strive to create an atmosphere that is conducive to the maximum development of the students' spiritual, intellectual, moral, aesthetic and physical potential. This enables the students to integrate Christian principles, values and attitudes that will help them to live and to influence others to live according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

When our students graduate from Our Lady of Refuge School, we expect them to have incorporated the following values in their lives:

SPIRITUAL VALUES

Our goals are to:  help each student come to know and love Christ, His message and his Church and make each student aware of his/her responsibility for spreading the faith to to others and responding to the obligations of Christian service and witness.

To achieve these goals we expect our students to:

  • - participate in the Catholic community (prayer, worship, community service)

  • - demonstrate knowledge of the Catholic faith and demonstrate respect for self and others

  • - participate in mission outreach activities as expressions of faith commitment;

  • - be aware of themselves as members of family, church, local and global communities;

  • - view ethnic and cultural diversity as a strength; and

  • - be positive examples and follow positive role models.

INTELLECTUAL VALUES

Our goals are to: foster an intellectual curiosity which will motivate students for a life-long quest for knowledge; help students recognize that all things come from God; and prepare students to become responsible citizens.

To achieve these goals we expect our students to:

  • - demonstrate grade level understanding of faith and morals;

  • - demonstrate grade level competence in all curricular areas;

  • - use appropriate tools for research;

  • - summarize, outline, take notes, and make effective use of oral and written data; and

  • - listen, reason, evaluate, and convey information verbally and in written forms.

AESTHETIC VALUES

Our goals are to: help each student become a well-integrated person with a good self concept, and develop self-esteem and an appreciation of each individual as a child of God and a unique entity.

To achieve these goals we expect our students to:

  • - participate in faith and spiritual activities;

  • - demonstrate an appreciation of fine arts activities; and

  • - participate in music activities.

PHYSICAL VALUES

Our goals are to: develop an awareness of the body as an instrument of God's grace; develop good physical skills, including coordination, agility, strength and endurance; promote good health and hygiene; and promote a positive attitude toward physical development.

To achieve these goals we expect our students to:

  • - appreciate the body as a gift of God;

  • - participate in Physical Education activities, including formal fitness programs;

  • - participate in team activities;

  • - develop an attitude of sportsmanship transferable to all walks of life; and

  • - participate in health and appropriate human sexuality instruction.

It is our expectation as administration and faculty that our students will integrate the principles of the Gospel values and their acquired knowledge into a life that gives service to God and community.
