A Message from Mrs. Pierce, Jr. High Math and Science Teacher
Welcome back to school! I hope a relaxing and fun-filled summer, ready to embrace a new school year here at Our Lady of Refuge! My name is Mrs. Pierce and I am new to OLR with 9 years of experience teaching K, 2nd grade and middle school Math and Science. I am recently married and love living and teaching in Long Beach! During my free time I like to garden, cook and ride my bike. I love the TV show How Its Made on the Discovery Science Channel. If you haven’t viewed it, please check it out!
This year in Science we will have “Thomas Edison Tuesdays” where students will partake in a variety of hands-on group activities exploring STEM concepts. Our new online curriculum is 21st century learning in full effect! We are using ck12.org, where all junior high student will read, explore and watch all science content 100% online!
In 6th grade, we will construct plate tectonics, explore erosion and learn about air quality. In 7th grade we will learn about life cycles, construct a 3D visual of a cell and learn about how our bodies work. Lastly, in 8th grade we explore chemical reactions, learn about sound and dive into the Solar System again!
OLR has purchased a shiny new math series for 6th, 7th and 8th grade called “Go Math!” This curriculum is Common Core aligned and each student will receive their own consumable math workbook. You can also access this series online.
Looking forward to an activity filled school year!
