Science Program

At Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School in Long Beach, we provide a nurturing environment for our students to learn and grow. One of the areas that we are especially proud of is our science program. In our program, we do not just teach science. Instead, we facilitate for students while they actually perform science and scientific experiments using the scientific method.

At Our Lady of Refuge, the science program is separated out by grade level so that students get exposed to a variety of different sciences throughout their time at our campus. From earth science to life science to physical science, which is the basis for chemistry, we provide students with the environment to become active learners with science.

Science & Technology In The Classroom

Our science program is about more than just memorizing certain aspects of science out of books. Using the scientific method, our students are taught to ask a question and then to answer it using science in their classroom labs. Our science labs explore stimulating activities like extracting plant DNA from plant matter and using electrolysis to precipitate copper from a solution.

The science program also incorporates technology into the classroom. This includes the use of computers, tablets and online video to help our students understand key scientific facts in their areas of study.

Participation in Science Fairs & Research Projects

Additionally, for our junior high students, we strongly encourage them to participate in the Los Angeles County Science Fair where students work on long term projects that span many months. This allows students the opportunity to really delve into a scientific topic they enjoy learning about while fostering a collaborative expression of all of the subjects they are learning at school including language arts, math, religion, social studies, computer skills and art.
